Ana Lisa’s mother’s mother, Mary Beachy Diener, died yesterday morning. We’ll be traveling out Wednesday to the funeral in Illinois.
I may write more at some point, but for now here’s a story of the gentle cussedness embodied by this fine woman. Any echoes in the life of a certain granddaughter are pure coincidence, I’m sure.
Grandma Diener fell and broke her femur bone a few years back. Suffice it to say the recovery was long and difficult … not that anyone would have known. She may have needed a walker to get around, but this simply became an added accoutrement to her normal daily routine. Soon reports were filtering in to us of Grandma Diener hoofing out to the garage, strapping the walker onto the back of the tractor lawn mower, and launching off on determined mowing sprees.
One day Ana Lisa’s Uncle Gene was in the living room when he heard a house-rattling clatter and bang all the way down the basement steps. He rushed over, sure he’d find his mother bent and battered at the bottom.
But there was Mary, gripping the handrail as she slowly made her way down the steps. The banging occurred when she’d pitched her walker on down ahead of her.
This was all, naturally, according to plan. Rather than ask someone to go to the basement to get whatever it was she was after, she threw the walker ahead so it would be at hand when she’d made her own way down the steps. For the return trip she brought a ball of string. The way she had it worked out she would tie the string to the walker, hold onto the other end as she made her way back up the stairs, then use the string to pull the walker up after her.
Simple.

Ana Lisa and Tony, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your grandmother. Please know that you are in my thoughts, even more than usual. She sounds like quite a woman. Safe travels and best wishes.

Hey guys- I’m so sorry to hear about your grandmom, Ana Lisa. I remember you telling stories about her and know that she’s been on your mind for awhile. I liked the story that Tony put up here…reminds me of something my own grandmother might do. Travel safely. I’ll be thinking of you and your family and I’ll talk to you guys soon.

Thanks, Tony, for a touching tribute to Grandma Diener. Though I didn’t really know her, I have heard such inspiring stories about her gentle, yet determined, spirit. And the few times I did have the honor to converse with her, I so enjoyed her thoughts on things. Yes, travel in safety and special memories.
